Minivan, SUV or pickup: which vehicle should you choose to live the vanlife? At Roadloft, we’ve designed solutions for every type of vehicle. Whether you’re dreaming of a nomad life, a short road or an off-grid getaway, there’s a kit for you.
The main distinction between our different kits lies in the interior space and the needs you wish to fulfill. Here’s an overview to help you find your way around:
Clearance height refers to the space between the Roadloft conversion kit (including mattress) and the vehicle ceiling. Can you sit there? Read or relax under cover? The importance of this factor depends, of course, on your needs and the type of trip you’re planning.
With generous clearance above the kit, the minivan kit allows you to sit comfortably on the bench to read, eat, work or simply relax under cover.
With a rigid Fibrobec-type cap, the pickup box offers an interesting amount of headroom. Clearance varies according to the model chosen, but is sufficient to sit on the bed, work on the included tables and eat.
SUV interiors are generally narrower and lower in height than those of minivans or pickups. This is due in part to the raised floor sill, designed for off-road use and four-wheel drive. The space of the SUV kit is mainly used for sleeping, and life on board takes place outside. Still, it’s a great alternative to a tent, since the SUV kit lets you sleep safely and dryly.
Our Hatchback kit is a shorter, lower version of the SUV kit. It features dimensions adapted to smaller vehicles and a slightly higher clearance height, since it is lower in the vehicle.
All Roadloft conversion systems feature cleverly concealed storage spaces beneath the kit. Designed to maximize every available inch, they keep your living space uncluttered and everything within easy reach.
In the case of the minivan equipped with the conversion kit, the front seats always remain available, even when the bed is deployed. A benefit that customers find important, as they appreciate this permanent access to the comfort of their vehicle’s front seats for reading, listening to music, chatting, contemplating the landscape, or easily getting back on the road.
With up to 246 L of storage space (the equivalent of 5 trekking bags), every nook and cranny of the kit pickup is designed to maximize space without cluttering it up. Compartments are accessible from two sides, concealed to keep surfaces clear, and fitted with ventilated panels to keep out moisture. Everything has been designed to help you store more, handle less… and enjoy more.
In the case of an SUV equipped with a camping kit, you’ll need to remove the bed panels to move the vehicle’s front seats back (which must be moved forward to make room for the long bed, despite the space available).
Our minivan camper conversion kit is designed to accommodate a portable toilet at the end of the bed.
As for the SUV camper kit, it’s not possible to install a toilet in duo mode (double bed), as space is too limited. In solo mode (single bed), however, a portable toilet can be installed on the raised rear bench.
As for the pickup kit, it doesn’t include any interior space dedicated to a toilet. On the other hand, if you’re traveling in remote areas, we recommend a simple solution: a shovel or toilet combined with a portable shower shelter for maximum privacy.
All our kits are equipped with an outdoor camp kitchen. Wherever you are, you can cook in the open air, enjoy the view and keep the vehicle’s interior clean.
